John Wiitala, Bass

John Wiitala has played bass on the San Francisco Bay Area Jazz scene for the last 35 years. John studied bass with Robert Morrow and received training in harmony and theory from Elvo D’Amante. He apprenticed with local luminaries such as Hal Stein, Jessica Williams, Bill Bell, Smiley Winters, Warren Gale,Vince Lateano, Richie Goldberg, Donald “Duck” Bailey, Al Plank and Noel Jewkes.

He has toured and recorded with Jessica Williams, Bruce Forman, Mark Levine, Wesla Whitfield, Mike Greensill and Randy Porter.

Backing up traveling artists is another part of the gig and John has happily accompanied Charles McPherson, Ernestine Anderson, Bud Shank, Shorty Rogers, Lou Levy, James Moody, Benny Golson, Mark Murphy, Charlie Rouse, Pete Jolly, Rebecca Parris, Joe Henderson, Sheila Jordan, Enrico Pieranuzzi, Scott Hamilton, Arturo Sandoval, Richie Cole and a host of others through the years.

Besides working with Adam Shulman’s bands, John plays with Mario Guarneri’s Quartet, Wesla Whitfield and Mike Greensill Erik Jekabson, TBD, Mark Levine’s Latin Tinge, Paula West, Patrick Wolff and Anton Schwartz. He’s also on the faculty at the Jazzschool Institute.
